JAMES KING CREATIVE CONSULTANT

  FAQ's ABOUT MY SERVICES

So, what is a Creative Consultant?

I provide Brainstorming, Concept, Design and Development services for a variety of projects in various entertainment industries. Much like a Creative Director, I oversee all creative aspects from concept through to production. Along with the art and design, I also am heavily involved in the writing and marketing of many of the projects. Many of the projects are tied to licensed characters and/or concepts which crossover the boundaries of Motion Picture, Television, Theme Attractions, Theme Restaurants, Toy Products, Intellectual Properties, Animation, Consumer Products, Merchandising, Interactive and Technology Projects and on occasion the Music industry.

When asked I often say, "I'm and idea guy, artist, writer and director all rolled into one. My job is to make projects the best they can be, and to think of the ideas that other have missed."

So you have experience in these multiple industries, how's that going to help my project?

Having the diverse background that I do allows me access to concepts and creative approaches that are not typically utilized by designers with only single industry experience. In today's day and age, the line between the different industries has become more and more blurred. Builders and producers are incorporating theming into all aspects of their projects, movies, television and, with the internet, even non-entertainment companies are shifting their marketing towards extensive, creative licensing programs and brand development. As merchandizing becomes part of nearly all-contemporary projects, it becomes necessary to have the knowledge of how to properly exploit a property while maintaining its longevity and integrity. With my crossover experience you get an idea guy, a designer, an art director, a marketing and promotions guy, a property development expert, a copy and creative writer and a project manager, with the understanding of engineering, planning, fabrication and materials to make sure it all works in harmony.

What are your strongest abilities?

You mean beyond extensive experience in ever changing, creatively demanding, top money generating, cutting edge industries?

Well, my strongest ability is the most intangible and therefore the hardest to market. It's my brainstorming and conceptual ability. I avoid using the term "Idea Guy" whenever possible, because everyone in the industry makes that claim. However, claiming you are an "Idea Guy" and being able to consistently produce inventive ideas, project after project, year after year, is another animal altogether.

I bring to each project one thing that cannot be learned or taught, Instinctive Creativity. From being trained at an early age as an inventor, I developed the ability to look at a project of any kind, identify potential problems and instinctively develop multiple solutions. From which is drawn an efficient, effective and comprehensive resolution plan. Over the years, having to constantly be innovative and unique, and find designs and solution outside the obvious, this ability has developed into a powerful, creative instinct an almost sixth sense for finding the correct approach.

I'm often asked, "How do you come up with your ideas?" Truth is I really don't always know. Sure, I have certain techniques that I use to get into an effective state of mind, but for the most part you just get into the zone and start bouncing out ideas and the ideas just flow. Some of the best ideas came from sitting around with the creative team, being our usual goofy selves.

So the quandary, how do I demonstrate on a website something as indefinable as conceptual ability? Simple, I can't. I can only demonstrate it by actually working with you, so; hopefully you will be able to see my ability in the content of this site and from my past projects.

How can your services benefit an existing project?

This is a question I get most often. Many of the projects I consult on have already begun the initial stages. When this is the case I concentrate my efforts on several areas.

Content - What is the original concept and how can it be improved, or punched up without losing the initial intent.

Identification and elimination of time bombs - These are the quiet problems that are often overlooked, but are potentially disastrous to the budget and the long-term plan of the project.

Strategic Marketing - developing a workable effective marketing and promotions plan along side the completion of the project. Let's face it, without solid marketing and promotions you're dead in the water.

Why should I consider bringing you on board my project when I have my own people on staff?

Here is the question where I either gain or loose your business. Why? Because everyone wants to believe that their Creative Management Team is the best in the business. In my experience, there is always room for improvement. That is not something that people like to hear. Let's face it, as good as your team is, there are inherent limitations. Firstly, they work directly for you and their supervising managers; your employees are not exactly motivated to tell you or their bosses that the path you are on might not be the right one. Employees also have to weigh each idea against a great deal of politics when making a decision or recommendation. It's not always a prudent career move to step on coworker's toes for the good of the project or the company for that matter. I know, I know. You're saying, "That doesn't happen in my office." Trust me on this one it happens everywhere, it's the nature of the beast. If I had a nickel for every project that lost money or went down the tubes because of office politics, well, I'd have a whole bunch of nickels!

Another big factor is that it is extremely difficult to find full time employees that have the advantage of lots of experience and a diversified background. Therefore, you get problems like Architects and Designers that don't really understand construction and fabrication because they have never built anything. Marketing people that don't fully understand the concepts they are marketing, writers that don't know the intricacies of including opportunity for future licensing and merchandizing in the conception of the project, etc. This is not to say that these are ineffective Creative Teams, it's just that the people that typically reach the skill level that you really want are the one's that go freelance, another unfortunate truth of the industry. My involvement allows me to come in without having to worry about what might happen to my future with the company, or worry about reprisals for voicing my true opinion, because that is what you are paying me for!

With your background and experience you must be too expensive for me to hire on, right?

WRONG. I also get this reaction a lot. I am actually very competitive and surprisingly affordable. I do have a regular rate, however, I do use a sliding scale that adjusts to the type of project and level of responsibility involved. It is almost always the case that I save a project far more money than I receive in salary or fees, not to mention that the projects I work on tend to gross higher revenue than previously expected. I also, adjust to what I call "the fun factor"; I'm fortunate enough that I'm able to choose projects that are more Funnerer (yes, I said Funnerer.) Before you decide that I must be too expensive, please ask first. You may be pleasantly surprised. After all there is no charge for the first consultation, I've always found it difficult to quote a price before I know what the clients needs are, weird huh?

(I could also never understand why clients pay lawyers $500 and hour for the privilege of meeting them in order to determine if they are the right person to help them protect the idea that the creative team came up with despite having the creative budget slashed in order to save money to pay the lawyer.)

Okay, you've convinced me so far, but I don't want my clients to know I went outside my company, what about that?

Join the club. Many of my higher profile clients prefer that I work incognito. I have provided services for many of the top companies under Non-disclosure agreements. In fact, some of the best work I've done I can never discuss nor will I ever get credit for. Does that bother me? Not really. I forge strong bonds with my clients and, as much of my work is through recommendations, it all works out in the end. If this is a concern of yours we can easily arrange a solid working agreement.

After all that ,here it is again, the big ol' list of services, this time in categories! Yippy!
